Fort Leavenworth Namesake

Fort Leavenworth is named after Colonel Henry Leavenworth.  Born in New Haven, Conneticutt, in 1783, he is the son of veteran.  His father, Jesse Leavenworth served in the French and Indian War and the American Revolution.

Henry Leavenworth served and fought in the War of 1812 (Battle of Lundy’s Lane) and the Arikara War.  He assumed command of the 3rd Infantry Regiment in 1824, and chose the site for the present day Fort Leavenworth in 1827.  In 1832, the camp was named Fort Leavenworth.  Colonel Leavenworth died of fever in the Indian Territory in 1834. He was postumously promoted to brigadier general.  After his burial in the field, he was moved to his hometown for burial, before being moved a second time and buried at the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery in 1902.
