Katie's Legal Updates
September 19, 2017
Katie had her interview with the IO regarding the attack on her. She also met with a different IO to discuss the issues she has observed in her Warrior Transition Unit (WTU). Katie’s working hard during her own recovery to make sure she’s still taking care of other Soldiers – both as a Leader and as a nurse. Her dedication to helping others is an inspiration. She continues to work with AUSA Kim Flannigan to get ready for her attacker’s sentencing hearing which is coming up in the beginning of November. He is eligible for a maximum sentence of 20 years. There are a lot of different factors that must be considered in determining a sentence and Katie is working diligently to make sure that the full impact of HIS attack is clear.

Katie was scheduled to meet with the IO this week, but Hurricane Harvey had other plans. Since Katie’s in San Antonio and there was so much potential for poor weather, the IO moved back her interview. Katie is anxious to speak with the IO and help the Army better protect other Soldiers.

The Army is now moving forward with their own investigation in to the attack on Katie. An Investigating Officer (IO) is looking in to the facts and circumstances of the attack to see where the breakdowns occurred that allowed a disgruntled employee to escalate his aggressive behaviors. Katie is so thankful for the support she has received, including coverage by The Daily Beast, People Magazine, ZDoggMD and others. While the Army investigation is ongoing, she wants to make sure that the IO has access to all the facts and circumstances to ensure that this type of situation doesn’t happen to someone else.

This week 1LT Katie Blanchard’s attacker was found guilty of assault with intent to commit murder. The jury deliberated on the count and found beyond a reasonable doubt that the disgruntled employee attacked Katie, he did so with the intent of ending her life. It took almost a year for the justice system to get this far. 1LT Blanchard thanks Assistant U.S. Attorney Kim Flannigan for all her hard work on this case. While this is one big step towards making sure HE pays for his crime, Katie’s fight to ensure that other individuals aren’t put in harm’s way is just beginning. Her attacker will be sentenced in early November.
